UPDATE November 2013: Nia Gil won re-election as a State Senator, an office she has held since 2002.
New Jersey, District 34
As a State Senator, Nia uses her legislative power for economic and social change. To ensure fairness for everyone, she authored the one of the first laws to ban racial profiling. Nia led the fight to override Republican Governor Chris Christie’s veto of funding for Planned Parenthood. She also championed the state’s low-cost prescription drug program for senior citizens.
A proud mother and grandmother, Nia fights to make sure every child, no matter where they live, has the opportunity for a quality education. And when Republican Governor Chris Christie decimated the state’s school funding formula, Nia was there to fight to fully fund the state’s urban and suburban schools.
