Bernie Sanders joined with citizen groups to protest the Peter G. Peterson* “Fiscal Summit” where elite power brokers including House Budget Committee Chair Paul Ryan (R-WI), House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), former Sen. Alan Simpson, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and former President Bill Clinton will gather inside to discuss a so-called “grand bargain” budget that will cut Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid.
The Bowles-Simpson deficit reduction plan, authored by Erskine Bowles and former Senator Alan Simpson (R-WY), is once again being discussed in Congress as a possible model for 'bipartisan' (?) deficit reduction legislation. Members of Congress should know that the Bowles-Simpson plan would cut Social Security benefits for today’s and tomorrow’s beneficiaries. Of even greater concern, it would end Social Security as we know it.
"Maybe the time is now to ask Mr. Peterson and his billionaire friends to start paying their fair share of taxes rather than devastating middle-income and working families," Sanders said on ABC 22 Fox 44.
VIDEO (7 mins 38 secs):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGv7NVdeItA&feature=share
The Bowles-Simpson plan:
http://my.firedoglake.com/socialsecurityworks/2012/05/15/livestream-sen-sanders-speaks-out-against-pete-petersons-fiscal-summit/
*Peter G. Peterson an American businessman, investment banker, fiscal conservative, author, and politician whose most prominent political position was as United States Secretary of Commerce under Richard Nixon. He is most well known currently as founder and principal funder of The Peter G. Peterson Foundation, which he established in 2008 with a $1 billion endowment.
Before serving in the White House, Peterson was Chairman and CEO of Bell & Howell, from 1963 to 1971. From 1973 to 1984 he was Chairman and CEO of Lehman Brothers. In 1985 he co-founded the private equity firm, the Blackstone Group. Peterson was Chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations until retiring in 2007, after being named chairman emeritus. In 2008, Peterson was ranked 149th on the "Forbes 400 Richest Americans" with a net worth of $2.8 billion.

#WOW Here's how you've become a political football *again* to the GOP: the House waters down the VAWA bill, passes it, then kicks it over to the Senate. If the Senate balks because of the missing provisions, they look bad. And if the Senate passes the flawed bill, it makes President Obama look bad for not signing it, hence it's suddenly the Democratic President who's waging a War on Women. How a-holey is THAT? And of course women who get beaten by their domestic partners aren't really afforded much protection by this bill. Now "low-information" voters who skim headlines think, "Shame on President Obama! That's not nice!" And of course, the Republican WOMAN who co-authored the House bill will be at the head of the pack claiming the president doesn't support women. Evil. Just evil. ~Cyn
