UPDATE: CEO of EdenFoods Michael Potter doubled-down on the douchebaggery. Oh yes he did. Make sure you join our Thunderclap, which launches 6:00 pm ET on May 12, 2013! He didn’t get the message the first time. We’ll have to yell a little louder!
Every now and then the CEO of Whole Foods says whack stuff, such as comparing Obamacare to fascism. And you know what? I take my crunchy hippie self to buy groceries ELSEWHERE. Because why should my crunchy hippie dollars enable that shit?
Well now it’s Eden Soy (Eden Foods) that’s pulling sketchy stuff. Irin Carmon reports in Salon that:
In court filings, Eden Foods, represented by the conservative Thomas More Law Center [emphasis mine], alleges that its rights have been violated under the First Amendment, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and the Administrative Procedure Act.Eden Foods, which did not respond to a request for comment, says in its filing that the company believes of birth control that “these procedures almost always involve immoral and unnatural practices.”
Set aside the whole debate about women and phytoestrogens found in soy — I’m tired of the marketing bait and switch from companies sporting the wingnut mullet (hippie business in the front, wingnut social conservatism party in the back).
We get nonsense about not covering contraception in our health insurance from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Why is a food retailer pulling the same crap? Hello, women are probably 99% of your customers, EdenFoods. You don’t get to treat your 128 employees like they work for the diehard conservative wing of the Catholic church on our behalf. NO THANKS.
Thomas More Law Center?? The right-wing Christian, anti-gay, anti-Muslim, pinwheel-eyed Michele Bachmann-loving legal advocacy group based in Michigan? (Yes, Ms. Pinwheel Eyes is on their board.) Say no more.
So join me in giving @EdenFoods a nice big Thunderclap.it to let them know their undercover right-wing agenda is not okay and their cover’s been blown. At an appointed time, we’ll all let fly with Tweets that let EdenFoods know how we feel about their secret ingredient: wingnuttiness.
Drop the lawsuit, EdenFoods, or get dropped from my shopping list.
Cynematic enjoys farmer’s markets and CSAs, thankyouverymuch.
You had me at “wingnut mullet.” I am now at the point where I expect all businesses to be anti-progressive, but it does add insult to injury when they market specifically to us. Another one added to my “products/stores to avoid” list.
Corporations have no say in what drugs a person can or can’t take. This is just another attempt by men to control women. Your conservative religious views of controlling women are unacceptable and not everyone believes in cristianity, so stop pushing it on all of us. Your views are not the only views. Everyone is entitled to to have different views. You do not get to tell others what they can and cannot do with their own bodies.
