Extreme winter weather has made life difficult in most of the United States this week – but no place worse than Texas, where the infrastructure failed, leaving millions of residents without power, heat, fresh water, and food. Unlike the “former guy” who won the state’s electoral college votes, President Joe Biden quickly declared a state of emergency and invoked FEMA to provide assistance. This is ironic, as just weeks ago Texas Governor Abbott was talking about seceding from the Union.
It also did not look good for Senator Ted Cruz when he left his Houston home for an ill-advised family trip to Cancun. Especially when Beto O’Rourke – who does not hold office – has reached out to hundreds of thousands of Texans to help. Even Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (a New Yorker) has used her social media reach to raise a million dollars in one night to aid Texans.
Climate change is behind the increased extreme weather the nation has been experiencing, and President Biden today brought the United States back into the Paris Climate Accord, with a speech announcing to the world that America is back. Then the President flew to Pfizer’s manufacturing plant in Michigan to tour the facility and announce that production of their COVID vaccine will be doubling within a couple of weeks. The nation is on track to meet or exceed President Biden’s promise of 100 million vaccines administered in his first 100 days.
